Privacy Policy

This policy describes the visitor data Greene County Criminal History receives, why it is used, and when service providers may process it. Use of the website indicates acceptance of these practices.

Data You Give Us Directly

Search Queries

A name or location entered in a search box is sent to the third-party company that operates that tool. The provider processes the query and supplies its result. Greene County Criminal History does not keep or log those search terms on its own systems.

Messages and Contact Submissions

An email sent to the site may be retained long enough to answer and maintain the correspondence. It is not shared outside the organization unless disclosure is required by law.

Data We Gather Automatically

Ordinary server and analytics logs can receive technical details when a visitor loads a page:

  • Visited pages, view times, and referring website
  • Device type and operating system
  • Browser name and version
  • Internet Protocol address
  • Date and time stamps

Cookies and Analytics

Cookies are small files stored on a device. They and analytics services help measure traffic, popular pages, and site performance in aggregate. A browser can block or remove cookies, though doing so may change how some functions behave.

What We Do With This Data

Collected technical information supports limited operating needs:

  • Maintaining reliable and secure page delivery
  • Finding errors and performance problems
  • Sending a user-initiated query to the selected search partner
  • Measuring which Greene County resources visitors use
  • Displaying advertising that may reflect visitor interests

No Criminal-Record Data on File

Greene County Criminal History does not build, keep, or sell a database of individual criminal histories. It publishes reference information about official custodians, including the Greene County Sheriff, criminal courts, DCJS, and the New York State Sex Offender Registry. Visitor data is not assembled into a consumer report or a record about another person. The site is not a consumer reporting agency under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Third-Party Search Partners

Outside companies operate the search boxes. A query submitted there is governed by that provider's privacy terms, retention rules, and sharing practices. Those practices are not controlled by Greene County Criminal History. Review the applicable provider policy before entering information.

Links to Other Websites

Links may lead to the Greene County government, New York courts, DCJS, other state agencies, or outside services. Once a visitor follows a link, the destination's privacy policy applies. Advertising providers may also use their own systems to recognize activity across websites and select ads.

Who Might See Your Data

Personal data is not sold. Limited visitor information may be processed by:

  • Analytics vendors that measure traffic and performance
  • Search partners that receive a submitted query
  • Advertising networks serving pages
  • Government or law-enforcement bodies acting under a valid legal demand

How We Protect Your Data

Reasonable security practices are used to protect collected information. No internet service can promise perfect security, uninterrupted access, or complete protection against a breach.

Users Under 18

The website is intended for adults and does not knowingly collect personal information from a person under 18. Data identified as belonging to a minor will be deleted when the site becomes aware of it.

Your Data Rights

Rights may depend on a visitor's residence and the law that applies. New York's Freedom of Information Law, Public Officers Law Article 6, governs requests to New York government agencies, not data held by this private site. Criminal records also remain subject to dissemination and sealing limits in Criminal Procedure Law sections 160.50, 160.55, 160.57, 160.58, 160.59, and 720.35. Subject to applicable law, a visitor may:

  • Ask what personal information the site retains
  • Request correction of inaccurate retained data
  • Ask for deletion where the law permits
  • Opt out of processing when an applicable right allows it
